Tropical Storm Barry Recap

Tropical Storm Barry originated from a broad area of low pressure over the Yucatán Peninsula on June 27, 2025. As it moved into the Bay of Campeche, it developed a defined surface circulation and organized shower activity, eventually becoming Tropical Depression Two. By June 29, the system was designated as Tropical Storm Barry, positioned 90 miles east-southeast of Tuxpan, Veracruz. The storm, driven by a low-to-mid level ridge in the central Gulf, moved northwestward with minimal intensification due to wind shear. On the same day, Barry weakened to a tropical depression and made landfall near Tampico, Tamaulipas, with winds of 35 mph. The storm's low-level circulation dissipated over northeastern Mexico's mountains, but its remnants contributed to severe flooding in Central Texas on July 4–5 due to interaction with a Pacific moisture-laden trough.

Barry’s impact began with the tropical wave that caused flooding in Quintana Roo, resulting in water levels up to 39 inches and rainfall reaching 16.9 inches. The resulting flood damage was estimated at Mex$35 million (US$1.87 million). In Chiapas, heavy rainfall led to landslides, disrupting communication in several areas, while Belize suffered infrastructure damage and over 20 communities faced rising waters up to 19.7 inches. In Veracruz, Veracruz, two people were tragically drowned at sea due to rough surf, while similar fates met individuals in Santa María del Río, San Luis Potosí, and Matamoros, Tamaulipas, as vehicles were swept away by floodwaters and overflowing canals. These events highlighted the widespread and deadly implications of Tropical Storm Barry, underscoring the storm's significant and destructive impacts across multiple regions.
