Hurricane Beryl Recap

Hurricane Beryl formed on June 25th, south of Cabo Verde, and quickly intensified from a tropical depression to a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 165 mph. The hurricane made landfall in Grenada and caused catastrophic damage to Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and other islands in the region. In Venezuela, six people were killed and several were reported missing due to the storm.

As Hurricane Beryl moved west-northwestward, it passed near Jamaica and weakened to a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall in Tulum, Quintana Roo with sustained winds of 110 mph. The storm then emerged into the Gulf of Mexico and regained hurricane strength as it approached the Texas coast. Beryl made its final landfall near Matagorda, Texas, causing severe flooding and wind damage in the Greater Houston area. In total, 71 fatalities were confirmed, with preliminary damage estimates exceeding $6.86 billion.
