Hurricane Idalia Recap

Tropical Storm Idalia began as a trough of low pressure in the Eastern Pacific before crossing over into the Atlantic basin and organizing into a tropical depression near Cancún, Mexico. The storm drifted slowly due to weak steering currents, eventually intensifying into Tropical Storm Idalia before moving northward towards the Yucatán Channel. It strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane as it passed through the Gulf of Mexico, reaching peak intensity with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph and a minimum central pressure of 942 mbar.

Idalia made landfall near Keaton Beach, Florida, causing significant damage across the Big Bend region with high winds and storm surge. The storm weakened rapidly as it moved inland, eventually transitioning into an extratropical cyclone off the northeastern South Carolina coast. The remnants of Idalia impacted Bermuda with tropical-storm-force winds before dissipating offshore Atlantic Canada. The storm caused over $3.6 billion in damage and twelve deaths in the United States, with impacts felt as far north as the Mid-Atlantic region.
