Hurricane Kirk Recap

Hurricane Kirk, a Category 4 hurricane, formed on September 29 and lasted until October 7. It began as a broad area of low pressure west of Cabo Verde, which quickly developed into Tropical Storm Kirk. With "quite conducive" environmental conditions, Kirk rapidly intensified, reaching hurricane status on October 1 and Category 4 intensity by October 3. The storm peaked with winds of 145 mph before weakening and undergoing extratropical transition on October 7.

Kirk brought high surf to the East Coast of the United States, and caused significant damage in Portugal, Spain, and France. Portugal reported over 1,300 incidents, with Porto being the hardest hit city. In Spain, heavy rain and strong winds led to mudslides and road closures. In France, over 64,000 people lost power, roads were flooded, and boats capsized. Kirk caused widespread flooding in France, with significant rainfall in cities like Noirmoutier and Paris, as well as strong gusts reported in Villard-de-Lans.
