Tropical Storm Chris Recap

Tropical Storm Chris formed on June 30, 2024, after an area of low pressure in the Bay of Campeche quickly became better organized and intensified into a tropical storm. Shortly after formation, Chris made landfall in Vega de Alatorre, Veracruz, at peak intensity before rapidly weakening over the rough terrain of Mexico and dissipating on July 1. The storm brought heavy rains to several states in Mexico, including Chiapas, Hidalgo, and Veracruz, resulting in flooding, overflowing rivers, and mudslides.

The flooding caused by Tropical Storm Chris led to the closure of schools in 41 municipalities in Veracruz, the evacuation of hundreds of families, and damage to numerous homes. Tragically, an elderly man in San Salvador lost his life after being buried by a mudslide, and four police officers in Tepetlán, Veracruz, were swept away by an overflowing stream while surveying storm damage. Overall, more than 20,000 people were affected by flooding in Xochiatipan, demonstrating the destructive impact of Tropical Storm Chris on the region.
