Hurricane Ernesto Recap

Hurricane Ernesto formed in the central or tropical Atlantic in August 2024. The disturbance quickly developed into a low-pressure area and intensified into a tropical storm, later becoming a hurricane as it moved through the Lesser Antilles, impacting the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Ernesto continued to intensify, reaching Category 2 hurricane status before weakening due to wind shear. The storm made landfall in Bermuda as a Category 1 hurricane before weakening into a tropical storm and then re-intensifying into a Category 1 hurricane once again before becoming post-tropical.

The impacts of Hurricane Ernesto were felt in various regions, with main roads closing in Guadeloupe and power outages affecting tens of thousands of customers in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda. Tragically, the storm led to several deaths in South Carolina, North Carolina, and New York City due to rough sea conditions. Throughout its duration, Ernesto caused significant damage and disruption, highlighting the destructive power of hurricanes on communities and infrastructure.
