Hurricane Helene Recap

Hurricane Helene was a Category 4 hurricane that occurred from September 24 to September 27. The National Hurricane Center began tracking a broad low-pressure area in the western Caribbean on September 22, which quickly developed into Tropical Storm Helene on September 24. The hurricane made landfall just east of Florida's Aucilla River at peak intensity before weakening and dissipating over Tennessee on September 27.

Prior to Helene's landfall, states of emergency were declared in Florida and Georgia due to the expected high storm surge and hurricane-force gusts. The storm caused catastrophic flooding and spawned numerous tornadoes, resulting in about 240 deaths. This made Helene the second-deadliest hurricane to hit the continental United States in fifty years, with only Hurricane Katrina in 2005 causing more fatalities. The impacts of Hurricane Helene were felt across several states, leading to widespread devastation and loss of life.
