Hurricane Tammy Recap

Tropical Storm Tammy formed from a well-defined tropical wave that entered the Atlantic from the coast of Africa in mid-October. The storm struggled to intensify initially due to dry air and strong wind shear, but eventually organized into a tropical storm on October 18. Tammy strengthened into a hurricane and impacted Barbuda with winds of 90 mph before moving northwestward and then north-northwestward. By October 25, the storm had peaked as a Category 2 hurricane before weakening back to a tropical storm amidst unfavorable conditions.

Barbuda and Antigua received minimal damage from the storm, with only isolated reports of blackouts and evacuations. Guadeloupe experienced hurricane-force winds, but overall there were no major reports of serious storm damage. Rainfall amounts across the Leeward Islands ranged from 4 to 8 inches and storm surge heights were between 1 and 3 feet. Bermuda was impacted with wind gusts of 40 mph. After the storm, the CCRIF made payouts for Excess Rainfall to St. Kitts and Nevis totaling over $1.5 million.
